Sustainability in aquaculture

07-02-2011

Aquaculture is playing an increasingly important role in supplying fish for human consumption. Fish contain healthy proteins and essential long chain omega-3 fatty acids necessary in a balanced diet.

Traditionally feeds for aquaculture depend largely on the use of fish meal and fish oil, especially for carnivorous species. However, fish species used to produce fish meal are a limited resource. Therefore it is essential that the aquaculture industry will become more efficient in using the marine resources. The ultimate goal is for fish farming to operate sustainably and be a net fish producer. A sustainable aquaculture industry supplies healthy food for the people, uses the planet's resources responsibly while the environmental impact is limited and is profitable.
